BEST Helius detects aflatoxin on dried figs

BEST (Belgian Electronic Sorting Technology) is an innovative company specialized in manufacturing sorting machinery for the food and non-food industry. Separating foreign objects, discolorations or imperfections is BEST’s corporate objective. Thanks to a wide range of technologies (laser, camera, LED, X-ray, or a combination) BEST is able to solve many sorting challenges.

The detection of mycotoxins, invisible to the human eye, is one of the technological breakthroughs BEST has been working on for the last years. Before, BEST was already able to successfully detect aflatoxins in nuts, but sorting dried figs was a new application.

As a pioneer, Yateks accepted to have a sorter on trial. This offered BEST the opportunity to test the sorting efficiency in real production. After the analysis of the good results, Yateks decided to purchase the machine.

We would also like to thank Yateks for giving us the possibility to organize a demonstration week in their factory some weeks ago. This enabled us to show our machine to other figs processors as well, where we saw a lot of interest.

For over 30 years, Yateks name has stood for offering high quality dried fruits. As a second generation family-runned company, it is their concern and duty to continue along the path of uncompromising quality day after day. Yateks’ 300 employees play an important role in ensuring that each and every product fulfils the high demands of IFS and BRC Food Safety Systems.

Mr. Baris Bayhan, Managing Director at Yateks, says “To detect aflatoxin in dried figs and sort out the bad products by laser sorting technology was a dream for us. After a R&D project of five years, this dream came true. We believe that this innovative project will break new ground in the sector, and as the developer and first practitioner, we are proud being the pioneer and guide for other companies in our industry.”

“We would like to thank Yateks for the confidence and the collaboration in testing this new sorting solution, as the first one in the industry” explains Steven Hiel, Area Sales Manager at BEST.
